The two halves of the station had separate entrances, and each half had its own character. The Brighton side, run by the LBSCR, was regarded as superior to the Chatham side, the clientèle being the middle and upper classes travelling to the country or the south coast, for entertainment and high living. The Chatham side, run by LCDR, was much more working class, their trains taking dockworkers and merchant seamen to the east end of London and the Chatham docks.

In the year 1870 several alterations and improvements were made at Victoria, and in 1878 the subway down to the Metropolitan District underground station was constructed; but generally speaking the station remained substantially the same during the first forty years of its life. Both sides of the station provided for holiday trips, and the LCDR introduced the ‘Family Saloon’ in 1881, a special coach which could be hired for family events. It had both first and second class compartments, so that wealthy families could bring their servants with them on holiday. The carriage was fitted out with toilet facilities, and included a large saloon in the centre of the coach for parties or family gatherings.
